Leonard Cohen – Old Ideas

Leonard Cohen – Old Ideas

Just had to get on here to say how great I think the new Leonard Cohen record is.   I love this style of Leonard, sitting comfortably somewhere between New Skin for the Old Ceremony and I’m Your Man.  I’ve been dying to hear the Webb Sisters backing LC on record since they joined him on his last tour, and their voices along with Sharon Robinson are such a perfect compliment to his.  On some of his recordings from the mid-80s til now, the backing vocals have always been somewhat of a running commentary on his voice, drawing out the differences between theirs and his, but this configuration deepens the romance and emotion in such a spine-tingly wonderful way.   Plus the instrumentation on this record (the work of several collaborators) is sort of a hybrid of the best parts of his recent synthy production style and his classic organically orchestrated stuff–it’s great to hear him play the guitar with a real band behind him.   He has a darkly sly twinkle in his eye on this record, reinvigorated I think by the appreciation of his last tour, and it’s a delight to hear.   It makes me think that as he grows older he grows happier, and I hope that’s true.
